Oct 27, 2012 · I have an HF mini lathe and I've made many upgrades. I'm very interested in the CNC setup discussed here but I highly recommend DROs for use in the meantime. I hacked cheap Harbor Freight caliper heads and built a Shumatech DRO for them. I made my own longer slides using the capacitive strip material that I found from a vendor online.

I'm in the process of adding a DRO, which adds another 600+. The down side to the round column mill is that you have to rezero everything if you move the head up or down.

Jan 19, 2020 · Here is a photo of a Harbor Freight 6" digital caliper mounted on the Z feed on my mill. I fiddled around for a day or so getting this mounted. Sawed the unnecessary fittings off and cut to length, works great. Touch the part, hit the zero and off you go. The 500 may be well spent, of course it is easy when spending others money!!!
